Dad's cooler

Dad used to have a little red and white cooler that he used as a lunchbox. At some point in the last few years, he gave it to me. Wednesday I packed my lunch in it to go out in the field. After getting to the well, we realized I didn't bring a 5 gallon bucket to keep count how many gallons I pumped from the well. Dad's cooler was emptied, it's volume estimated and put into action.
Look Dad, your cooler was a part of ground water age dating!

Hash marks on the tailgate of the truck to count how many coolers full we pumped.

CFC sampling

Just a few pics of Don and I attaching nylon tubing to my Bennett pump last week. Couldn't use teflon because of possible contamination of CFC (chlorofluorocarbons) samples. Just in case you wanted to know, we are sampling for CFCs because they help to date how old the water is.
Don attaching the line to the pump. We then zip-tied the nylon to the rest of the tubes...

...which is all attached to the pump reel on the truck. hehehe I'll be out today doing the sampling.

The undergraduate experience: Northland College

A survey about your undergraduate college, provided by Krista Prokosch

Northland College: Ashland, Wisconsin. aka, Way up in on the shore of Lake Superior in the middle of nowhere.

When you first attended, where did you live?
Memorial Hall, the only three woman suite in the hall.

Who was/were your roommate(s)?
Marcy Hebenski and Michelle Oranowski

Do you still talk to them?
Unfortunately, no. They both transferred after freshman year…saw Marcy a few times since then, but not for years now.

Ever get in trouble in the dorms?
For being too loud.

Something you remember when you lived on campus?
My nose hairs freezing when I took my first step out of the dorm every morning because it was so dang cold!

First party attended?
The night before classes started freshman year over at the soccer house that was a year or two later condemned because the foundation was so deteriorated. My first beer out of a red plastic cup and the cops showed up!

Favorite place to go out to eat?
Country Kitchen had the best potato, bacon, egg skillet scramble thing ever…at any time of day or night. The Deep Water was the nice place to go though…after the Railhouse burned down. It’s all about the beer-cheese soup with the popcorn!!

Who had the best wings?
Oddly enough, I don’t think I had chicken wings once up there.

Did you go the library?
Oh yeah. I liked taking one of those big tables for myself and spreading all my stuff out.

Where did you buy your books?
The Chub

Ever attend a sporting event?
A million…and some I didn’t want to be at.

Have you ever spent the night on campus, not in a dorm?
No, don’t believe so. Came back really late, but that doesn’t count.

Favorite night to go out on, and where did you go?
Usually Friday night was the best for me, cause I could no nothing on Saturday and still have Sunday to do all the homework I had to do. We’d go so someone’s house for a party, to that nasty bar that Krista was talking about….it was some sad excuse for an Irish bar. They had good kamikazes and Frank or Sneides would always buy a round of them!

Where did you get coffee?
The Black Cat…first place I’ve ever had a taste for coffee, or a sugary excuse for coffee.

Favorite Year of Halloween?
Freshman year!! A huge party out at the farmhouse!

Ever have a job?
Oh campus jobs. I started out as a computer lab assistant freshman year and then switched over to being an earth science lab assistant. The latter was much better! Then Michelle talked me into becoming the men’s soccer manager. Then it was three years of washing men’s underwear, freezing my butt off at all the games and getting yelled at by coach…but made a ton of good friends! And then I did work at the local Dairy Queen on and off for two years.

What do you hate about your college?
I don’t think I hated anything about Northland. I really loved it. Ok, well I hated that it cost so much to attend. (And still do with every student loan payment!), and the student govenment...long story.

What did/do you love most about it?
I loved how small the school was. Only 700 students or less, I could walk from anywhere to anywhere else on campus in 10 minutes or less, small class sizes allowed me to ask all the questions I wanted, I got to know my professors pretty well, I got to know a large chunk of the students pretty well, we were right on the shores of Chequamegon Bay, so the sights were awesome and the swimming pretty good too (during those 2-3 months a year you dared get in the water!), it was just the best.

Where would you believe is the best location to live in?
I loved living in the ELLC (Environmental Living and Learning Center). The suites Krista and I shared were awesome, but I did like having the kitchen and livingroom we had in the apartment senior year when I lived with Krista, Sneids, Kane, Mike and Eric.

Year of graduation?
2003

Will you go back?
I’d love to if I can find the time and money.

How many parking tickets did you get there?
At least one, because I remember fighting it.

Finally, ever gotten arrested?
Nope. Alway be nice to the police.

Highway to Heaven Rest Stop

I realize this is going back to a former post about the Death Ride, but this is too funny not to post. The only guy in the picture of the 4 people with angel wings, Lynn Taylor, wrote new lyrics to Don Henley's Hotel California. Lynn spent the day a few hundred yards down the hill from our rest stop singing to the riders for extra encouragement to make it to the top. Ok, with that start humming Hotel California and read on...

"Highway to Heaven Rest Stop"
On this steep mountain highway, the damn wind in your face.
The warm smell of your armpits rising up into space.
Up ahead ‘round the corner you’ll find Ebbetts Pass.
Your arms are weary and your sight grows dim.
It’s time to rest your ass.
There they’ll stand at the tables. You’ll hear the dinner bell.
And you’ll be thinking to yourself this must be heaven in the middle of hell.
Then they’ll hand you a bagel and help you on your way.
You’ll hear voices high up in the trees.
Think you’ll hear them say,

“Welcome to the Highway to Heaven Rest Stop.
What a lovely place. Go and find your space.
There’s plenty of room at the Highway to Heaven Rest Stop.
At this time of year, you will find us here.”

Your minds are definitely twisted. I’ll take the Mercedes Benz.
While you toil up this hill, you and all of your friends.
How you ride up these mountains. Oh how you sweat.
Some ride and remember. Some ride and forget.
You can call a volunteer now, please bring me some wine.
And they’ll say, “We haven’t had that spirit here since last night at 9:00”.
And still those voices are calling from high in the trees.
Wake you up from your peddlin’ day dream, bring you to your knees,

“Welcome to the Highway to Heaven Rest Stop.
What a lovely place. Go and find your space.
They’re living it up at the Highway to Heaven Rest Stop.
What a nice surprise, you can rest your thighs.”

Mirrors on your helmets, the pink sports drink on ice.
And we’ll say, “You can rest as long as you like ‘till your back on your bikes”.
At this third of the passes, you can fuel up and feast.
Prepare yourselves for what’s to come, so you can conquer this beast.
The last thing you’ll remember as your riding up this hill.
Is a fool in his angel wings singing loud and shrill.
Relax have a cookie, kick back but you’ll see.
If you stay here off your bikes to long, you might never leave.

Tahoe Shakespeare Festival

Monday night me, Justin and my friend from work Lari and her husband went up to Sand Harbor for a night of sophisticated entertainment. hahahaha We went to the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival and saw "The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged)". Now I've read my fair share of Shakespeare in high school and college, but by no means have I read all 37 of his plays....and the sonnets are a whole different story. Therefore, I was a bit nervous thinking I would be quite lost during the reenactment of a few of his plays. Although I truly was lost a few time, the performance ended up being a complete comedy enacted by only 3 men. I guess that's authentic, as back in Shakespeare's day all the female roles were played by men. Most of the 2 hour show was spent on Romeo and Juliet and Hamlet, both of which I was fairly familiar with. Even though I didn't know much about the others, it was still quite funny seeing the way in which it was performed.

This was the stage. Nice background, eh? And I don't mean the painting of Shakespeare. The seating was all in the "bowled out" face of a sand dune. We all had short beach/lawn chairs (except for the wooden ones you see down in the expensive section) and a guy was waiting with a shovel when we came in to dig a ditch to anchor our chairs into the sand. Pretty cool. We packed a picnic dinner and then watched the show.

Moving Day

Justin finally took the leap down to Carson City last weekend. Some things were brought down earlier, but for the most part it all happened on Saturday.

Oh course, they gave him the nerdy Uhaul!

We spent all day boxing things up and loading the Uhaul. Luckily our friend, Sesh, came over to help with the lifting of the heavy furniture. This is the full Uhaul after we made the 35 mile trip to Carson City. We really weren't looking forward to unloading all that stuff right away!

The house isn't ready to be photographed on the inside yet...it's getting there. But here's a quick pic of the outside. Pretty sweet house. 3 bedrooms, 1.5 bath, all hardwood floors, lots of closet space, 2 stall garage and a big backyard. Justin's pretty excited.

New blog upgrade for me

So all you guys have cool pictures of yourselves on your blog that post when you leave a comment. I jumped on the bandwagon too...just had to find the right picture. It came out a little grainy since you're only allowed 50k for the pic, but this was a shot that was taken as a mugshot for my government ID.

Pennsylvania trip (Part Two)

Saturday we spent out on the boat. Woohoo! It felt so good to be back out on the Kinzua Reseviour! Although we didn't stop by Carp Bay (I waved to it as we drove by), Justin, Dad and myself all were up on skiis.

We saw 3 different bald eagles while at the lake. Dad's binoculars did a great job getting a good look at them.

Justin and I moved the second "treeman" to a more distant tree. (Notice he is sticking his tougue out at the closer guy!)For those that don't know, this is a view from the back deck of the camp.

Mom and I in the kitchen at camp.

And then Sunday we traveld back to Butler and had a cookout where most all of the family showed up. Uncle Kevin and Justin seemed to get along well!

Justin's 1st trip to PA (Part One)

Being home last weekend was a great time. We packed a lot of things in to our short visit, but we had fun doing it. Mom and Dad picked Justin and I up from the airport Thursday afternoon and we took the scenic route home. Funny, I've never been taken on the scenic route before...anyway...we headed to camp Friday morning in a downpour. It was awesome to see the rain! And because of all the rain, western PA was super green. That was one of the biggest observations Justin made...it's just so green around there. Friday afternoon we met Rick Weiland and Corky up at the Rocky Gap ATV trail and we rode the trail. Justin and I got to use on of Rick's quads, so we had a caravan of 4 quads.

Dad (on top of the hill) and Justin.

Stream where we saw a bunch of baby raccoons.

Near to far: Cork, Rick, Justin and Dad...this was a spot Mom and I got off because they had to do a nose-dive to get down past this first rock.

Dad bottomed out on a downed tree. Crazy the number of handsaws that appeared soon after.

Justin and I next to one of the old oil wells that are scattered all around this trial, and the whole Allegheny National Forest for that matter.
Awww.
